Engineering guidance — Stage 01 — PFAS Influent Characterization

Engineering guidance PFAS Influent Characterization No ATLAS calculator covers PFAS influent characterization. Record analytes and chain lengths, ng/L range, matrix and DOC/TOC, flow variability, and treatment or compliance objective from representative analytical data.

Stage 01 · Source basis

Influent Characterization

PFAS, matrix, flow, target.

Purpose

Declare the PFAS analyte set, measured concentration range, water matrix, flow envelope, and treatment or compliance objective that will govern the carbon evaluation.

Next decision

Decide what pretreatment is needed to protect the carbon bed.

Engineering questions

  • Which PFAS compounds, chain lengths, and concentration ranges govern?
  • What DOC/TOC, TDS, pH, temperature, and competing adsorbates are present?
  • Which seasonal or event-driven flow and quality cases must the vessels handle?

Key inputs

  • Flow and variabilitym³/h
  • Feed temperature°C
  • Feed TDSmg/L
  • Water matrix, pH, and competing adsorbatessite basis
  • Dissolved organic carbon (DOC)mg/L
  • Total organic carbon (TOC)mg/L
  • PFAS species and concentrations by chain lengthng/L
  • Treatment target / compliance basissite basis

Key outputs

  • Declared carbon-feed flow envelopesite basis
  • Declared PFAS species and concentration basisng/L
  • Declared DOC/TOC and competing-load basismg/L

Design Considerations

  • PFAS adsorption depends on compound, chain length, functional group, carbon type, and water matrix; a PFAS total alone is not a design basis.
  • DOC/TOC and other organic matter compete for carbon capacity and can change service behavior.
  • No dedicated ATLAS calculation tool currently covers PFAS species, chain-length, trace-level ng/L, matrix, or treatment-target characterization; establish this basis from representative analytical and project data before adsorption design.
