Engineering Basis

Methodology

Builds a sequential hydraulic grade line from declared pipe, pump, fixed-loss, and basin-boundary segments using Darcy–Weisbach and entered minor-loss inputs. This is an HGL screen; it omits velocity-head changes and does not calculate EGL or TDH.

Pipe velocity = Q/A; Reynolds number = vD/ν. Darcy factor uses f = 64/Re for laminar flow and Swamee–Jain for turbulent flow.

Major pipe loss uses Darcy–Weisbach; minor loss is ΣK·v²/(2g).

The sequential profile adds entered pump head and subtracts major, minor, and fixed equipment losses. A basin water surface is an explicit downstream HGL boundary.

Elevation is reported separately; pressure head where elevation is entered is downstream HGL minus elevation.

A segment minimum HGL criterion is evaluated once at its downstream station. The optional starting minimum HGL criterion is evaluated at the starting station.

For 2,000 < Re < 4,000, Swamee–Jain is used as a screening approximation and a transitional-flow warning is reported.

Scope / Limitations

  • Calculate pipe friction and minor loss, sequential HGL, pressure head, user criteria, and margin from declared hydraulic properties.
  • No transient surge, looped network solution, pump selection, system-wide NPSH, or open-channel gradually varied flow.
  • No hydraulic grade is inferred from process-unit names. Basin water surfaces and minimum HGL criteria must be declared.
  • A margin below a user criterion is flagged for review but is not classified as safe or unsafe.
  • This screening HGL profile omits changes in velocity head between segments. It adds entered pump head directly to HGL and does not calculate the total energy grade line or total dynamic head (TDH).
  • Freeboard and available driving head are not calculated. No US-unit conversion path is implemented; hydraulic inputs and outputs use SI units.
